About Preparer Index

Preparer Index is an independent directory of US tax preparers. Our goal is simple: take the credential and contact data the IRS already publishes, organize it state by state and city by city, and make it easy to browse without forms, accounts, or lead-gen funnels. Every listing is a direct pass-through of a row from the IRS's public PTIN holders extract — see the data methodology for details.

Who we serve

The directory is built for two audiences. First, taxpayers who want to verify a preparer’s credentials before hiring — or who want to find someone qualified to handle their specific situation. Second, preparers themselves, who can use the directory to confirm how their public credential record appears and to compare their listed specialties against peers in the same state or city.

What we are not

We are not affiliated with the IRS, any state Board of Accountancy, the National Association of Enrolled Agents, or any preparer franchise. We do not sell leads. We do not charge preparers to be listed. We do not rank preparers, and the order in which preparers appear on a city or state page is not an endorsement.

How we’re funded

The site is free to use. We do not accept payment for inclusion or for placement order, and no preparer can pay to influence how listings appear.

Updating your listing

If you are a preparer whose listing contains an error, please email us a correction. The IRS publishes a refreshed extract bi-annually; we update the directory from that extract, though this build does not auto-refresh.
